Saving Civic Education: Classroom to Community at 250
DemocracyReady NY and Long Island University’s Hudson Graduate Centers (LIU Hudson) will host a regional conference on Friday, March 27, 2026, from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm, to raise awareness of the urgency to expand civic learning in tandem with New York State’s new graduation requirements. Titled “Saving Civic Education: Classroom to Community at 250,” the day’s events will include discussions with elected officials, policymakers, students, and educators in the Hudson Valley and will showcase best practices in civic education. Congressman George Latimer, State Senator Shelley Mayer, NYS Regents Frances Wills and Aramina Ferrer, and Superintendent Ray Sanchez of Tarrytown will be among the day’s featured speakers.
The conference, which will take place at LIU Hudson on the Purchase campus, is the latest installment in the two organizations’ ongoing 2026 collaborative professional development series focused on civic education. The conference will be an extension of New York Civic Learning Week, which takes place from March 9-13, 2026. The event is expected to draw a broad audience of parents, students, educators, and local civic groups.
