Not all screen time is created equal, but the national conversation about school technology rarely makes that distinction. As districts pull back on devices to curb distraction, well-intentioned policies can reach further than intended, restricting the very tools that students with disabilities rely on to receive essential services, learn, and thrive.

As state and federal policies continue to shift this year, that distinction can easily get lost in the broader push to reduce screen time. Bringing together policy, edtech, and district perspectives, this conversation explores how leaders can hold onto that nuance, protecting access to essential tools while responding thoughtfully to legitimate concerns about technology use in schools.

Moderated by Anna Edwards, Chief Advocacy Officer & Co-Founder, Whiteboard Advisors, with panelists:

  • Penny Schwinn, Senior Advisor, Whiteboard Advisors; former Tennessee Commissioner of Education
  • Bonnie Contreras, Vice President, Clinical Solutions, Presence
  • Lauren Katzman, Executive Director, Urban Collaborative
  • Dr. Erin Senkowski, Deputy Superintendent, Saginaw Intermediate School District
