2024 Kevorkian Center Summer Institute

New York City and Global Migration: Urban Transportation, Housing, and Labor

The Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies is pleased to announce the Summer Institute 2024 for K-16 Educators. This intensive five-day program offers content-based training on urban life and migration into NYC from the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia. Each day, participants will explore the experiences of people from one of these world regions as they navigate and shape the city.

The program delves into the living histories of various migrant groups across NYC’s social landscape in areas of life of common, everyday concern for people here and around the globe. By thinking through and beyond regional boundaries in these ways, the program joins broader efforts to “globalize the classroom.” Whether teaching social studies or humanities, K-16 educators follow curricular guidelines that often involve integrating these topics into lesson plans. We aim to foster a professional development community of educators, scholars, administrators, stakeholders, and practitioners, all working together to enhance student learning. Join us to engage cutting-edge content, connect with other educators, and develop innovative classroom activities!

The intensive five day institute runs from, July 22-26 from 9 AM to 5 PM. Educators can earn up to 43 CTLE hours and a $500 stipend upon completion. The deadline to apply is June 15, 2024. If you have any questions, please email us at kevorkian.center@nyu.edu.
