In this session of the Hidden Voices of New York City series, students will learn about three LGBTQ+ New Yorkers whose stories have too often been “hidden” from the traditional historical record, but whose lives and legacies continue to shape our collective history and identity in the city. Each of the individuals is featured in the Hidden Voices resource guides, which are aligned to the New York City Department of Education’s Passport to Social Studies.

Featured New Yorkers:

  • Bayard Rustin (1912-1987): A civil rights organizer and pacifist who served as the chief strategist for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • Sylvia Rivera (1951-2002): A transgender activist who organized during the Stonewall Riots of 1969.
  • Jennie June (1874-?): A writer and activist from the Victorian and Edwardian era and one of the earliest transgender individuals to publish an autobiography in the United States.
