In the past few years, schools have seen an increase in newcomer students, students who are new to the country, new to the English language, and at times, new to school. While these children and families bring a wealth of cultural knowledge, strengths and linguistic diversity to our schools, many teachers and schools are overwhelmed and do not feel prepared to meet their needs.

Join University of Colorado Denver’s Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education (CLDE) program for this interactive panel of teachers and professors as we discuss practical tips on how to create community and prioritize a culture of care for newcomers in our schools.

Host: Dr. Sofía Chaparro, assistant professor of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education, CU Denver

Panelists:

Dr. Ester DeJong, professor and program leader of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education, CU Denver
Adria Padilla Chavez, newcomer instructional coach, Adams 14 School District, instructor of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education at CU Denver, and PhD candidate at CU Boulder
Andrea Restrepo, former fifth grade English Language Acquisition teacher, Denver Public Schools and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education program alum from CU Denver
Dr. Adriana Alvarez, assistant professor of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education, CU Denver
