Background: Youth Communication’s mission is to elevate teen voices to create real change. Through the power of true stories, written by youth who have been systemically marginalized, we create more supportive and successful learning communities. Our vision is to create a more empathic and respectful world for and with our young people, so they feel represented, heard, and supported to achieve their academic and personal goals.
Founded in 1980, Youth Communication (YC) helps young people write personal stories about their lives through our year-round writing program for the benefit of other young people just like them. We first publish stories in our two award-winning digital magazines, YouthComm and Represent: The Voice of Youth in Care.
Then, we integrate them into our social and emotional learning curricula and our culturally responsive professional development for youth-serving adults. The stories help educators become more aware of their students’ challenges and strengths so they can respond more effectively and build more supportive schools and youth programs.
YC is the only organization using real stories written by real teens to create change in this way. Read our teens’ stories here: https://youthcomm.org/ycteen/
