Teaching Geography through East Asian Picture Books: Workshop for K-8 Teachers
This in-person workshop for elementary and middle school educators teaching in Colorado will explore how to integrate picture books into geography and social studies lessons. Content will focus on teaching state standards through topics such as climate, habitat, environment, ecosystems, urban development, and East Asian cultures. The books highlighted in this workshop include Warrior Princess: The Story of Khutulun by Sally Deng, Rice by Hongcheng Yu, The Ocean Calls: A Haenyeo Mermaid Story by Tina Cho, The Sound of Silence by Katrina Goldsaito, and Mommy’s Hometown by Hope Lim. Participating teachers will receive a copy of all five books.
This workshop is sponsored by the Program for Teaching East Asia, a division of the National Association for Teaching About Asia, housed at the Center for Asian Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. The mission of the Program for Teaching East Asia (TEA) is to enhance and expand teaching and learning about East Asia in U.S. K-12 education.
