Behind the Book will be hosting a community book giveaway event on Saturday, November 6th (11AM – 4PM) and Sunday, November 7th (11AM – 3PM) at P.S. 43 Jonas Bronck School in the Bronx.

We will be giving away 5,000 new books in both English and Spanish, many featuring Black and Brown characters as well as those written by authors of color. Books have been chosen with readers of all ages in mind.

We will also have a storytelling hour hosted by Drag Queen Story Hour NYC on Saturday, November 6 at 2 pm, as well as a table dedicated to cookbooks for parents, caregivers, and kids to enjoy.

This follows on the great success we’ve seen with our previous Book Bashes, one in Harlem (October 2020) and Washington Heights (June 2021).

Behind the Book’s mission is to develop engaged readers and writers in underserved NYC public schools by designing and delivering literacy programs that are multi-disciplinary, culturally responsive, and promote deeper connections to books and their authors. The organization works with Pre-K to 12th graders in Title l public schools and gives books to students at the beginning of the school year, for winter break, and at the end of the school year, while also sending books to community centers and shelters in the neighborhoods where their schools are located. Drag Queen Story Hour is a fun and fabulous literary experience for children of all ages. A local drag queen or king from Drag Queen Story Hour NYC will read children’s books, sing songs, and introduce the concept of drag as a form of dressup and play.  Through storytelling and creativity, DQSH teaches children about gender diversity and difference of all kinds to build empathy and give kids the confidence to express themselves however they feel comfortable.
